LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER IN ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
    Salary £28,289 to £48,161 – Grade 8/9 Plymouth

The School of Engineering delivers teaching and research in the areas of Civil, Coastal, Mechanical and Marine Engineering, along with Environmental Building. Two core cross-disciplinary themes are energy (generation, conversion, and conservation) and sustainability (of materials, of energy and of the impact of engineering on quality of life). The School contains several areas of internationally excellent research and is submitting research to two Units of Assessment in RAE 2008. It is also noted for the quality and breadth of its professionally accredited engineering and building degrees. Teaching innovation has a high profile in the School; for example the Environmental Building group has led a £350K project that developed and disseminated excellence in student-centred construction education across over 40 UK universities and had a core involvement in a HEFCE award of a £4.5M Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning – the Centre for Sustainable Futures.

The present post is focussed on energy and its sustainable use in engineering and the built environment, and is centred in the Environmental Building group. Indeed, the successful candidate will be expected to be CIOB professionally qualified. This group comprises a highly motivated team that are recognised for professional, quality teaching and leading research and is on a growth trajectory. The team contribute to three undergraduate and two taught Masters Programmes. Research is centred on two main areas: the technology of buildings, including the thermal properties of materials, energy use, fire safety, intelligent buildings and facades; and management, including procurement, culture and trust, lean construction, delays in construction, construction innovation, project performance, supply chain and logistics.

The successful applicant will be expected to provide high quality teaching primarily in the field of environmental building technology and also be capable of covering mechanical and marine engineering issues related to energy and sustainability. Demonstrable research success in the areas of sustainable energy generation, usage and conservation is also expected. All academic staff in the School are required to undertake a range of administrative duties, including student recruitment activities, related to the degree programmes.

Recruitment and selection will be based on individual merit, however, we should particularly like to encourage applications from women, black and minority ethnic people who are under-represented in the Faculty of Technology.

Applicants should submit a standard application form. Further particulars and an application form are available from Personnel and Development, University of Plymouth, Plymouth, Devon PL4 8AA, UK (www.plymouth.ac.uk/vacancies, e-mail: jobs@plymouth.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0)1752 232168).
