2011 STUDENT COMPETITION: Q&A

2011 STUDENT COMPETITION: Q&A

IMPORTANT:

Dear BS’11 Competitors

I hope you are enjoying the competition and are now compiling your submissions. Some entrants have asked if it is possible to extend this Friday’s deadline. As a courtesy to you all, we are happy to extend this to Friday 12th August.

We look forward to receiving your submissions in due course.

Regards
Malcolm Cook

Building Simulation 2011 Student Competition is organized by IBPSA England in conjunction with IBPSA Australasia.

This Student Competition follows the success of a similar competition in the months running up to BS'09. The aim is to facilitate wider participation in the conference and to provide a competitive forum for student members of the building simulation community. It is expected that several tutors of relevant courses in universities around the world will use this as part of their teaching material. This document contains all the information relating to the competition. Entries will be judged prior to the conference with awards being made at the conference in Sydney in November 2011.

2011 IBPSA STUDENT COMPETITION is supported by the EPSRC Engineering Doctorate Centre in Virtual Environments, Imaging and Visualisation (EngD VEIV) was founded in 2001 at University College London as part of a collaboration between the Department of Computer Science and the Bartlett School of Architecture. The EngD VEIV funds and supports research engineers (REs) studying in areas related to the use of visualisation and imaging in engineering and design. In 2008 the Centre won major funding for 50 new places over five years.

2011 IBPSA STUDENT COMPETITION awards consist of:

  • FIRST PRIZE: $US500, books and IBPSA certificate
  • SECOND PRIZE: $US250, books and IBPSA certificate
  • THIRD PRIZE: $US250, books and IBPSA certificate

For further queries about the Competition, please email: Ljiljana Marjanovic-Halburd (l.halburd@ucl.ac.uk) or Malcolm Cook (Malcolm.Cook@lboro.ac.uk).

Questions and responses will be posted on this web site so please look here first to check that your query has not already been answered. Good luck with the Competition!

FAQ:

1. Do I need to pre-register for the competition?

No you don’t. If you wish
to take part simply submit your entry by the specified dead-line.

2. I am a graduate student. Am I eligible to compete?

Yes.

3. What does validated (simulation) code mean?

The validated code is a code that is externally recognised as being valid for the purpose of this work. In your report you may like to refer to previous work carried out using the code as evidence that the code is valid for this purpose.

4. Can we use eQUEST/DOE2.2 software for this competition?

Yes.

5. May we use computational fluid dynamics in conjunction with building energy modeling software?

Certainly.

6. Is the ground floor insulated?

No, it is not. The design conditions are for Australian climate and as the average annual temperatures in Sydney are higher than 18C the usual design practice is not to use ground floor insulation.

7. Can dimensions of the sub-plenum be changed or are they fixed?

As the ground floor construction is intended to be the construction between the plenum and the earth, the original intention was that the plenum would cover the entire building foot print. However competitors are free to change this according to the required free areas and ventilation servicing strategy they develop. The implication of this is that the construction of the ground floor is equal to that of an intermediate floor (with no insulation).

8. In Table A-3, under Equipment: Weekends & Holidays column is the value 0.00 between 4pm - 5pm? I'm only questioning this because it seems strange that the loading would then return to 0.15 after 5pm.

This is a typo and should read 0.25 for the 16:00 – 17:00 period
