UCL Bartlett: 4 EngD/PhD EPSRC Scholarships

Applications are invited for three EPSRC funded
EngD studentships (4 years) and an EPSRC funded PhD studentship (3 years) to
research a topic related to the general subject area of the UCL-AEDAS Building
Design and Performance Research Programme (2010-2014). This ranges from the
analysis of low carbon building design processes to the development of quantitative
building performance simulation tools, as well as research on the interaction
between the various aspects of building design, user behaviour and operational
performance. The UCL-AEDAS project team will provide guidance on 4 selected
topics provided that an applicant can demonstrate original thinking and
motivation to research a particular subject area. The student will be
supervised jointly by Dr Dejan Mumovic (UCL Bartlett School of Graduate
Studies), Harry Bruhns/Dr Alex Summerfield (UCL Energy Institute), and Dr Judit
Kimpian of AEDAS (industrial supervisor).

Research Topics:

  1. Developing Advanced Modelling techniques to
incorporate Performance Data and Simulation in Design
  2. Understanding Predicted vs. Operational
Performance of Schools: a Building Systems Perspective
  3. Playing for Keeps? Life Cycle Extension vs.
Replacement of Existing Buildings (Towards Low Carbon Construction)
  4. The Role of Feedback in Carbon Management
    in Design and Construction Practice

The studentship will cover tuition fees and
a tax-free maintenance stipend (£15,800/annum for PhD; £18,000/annum for EngD).
Candidates must meet the ESPRC funding eligibility requirements: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/Pages/eligibility.aspx

To apply, please write to Dr Dejan Mumovic
at the address below with a covering letter and a full CV (including contact
details for at least two academic referees plus marks/grades achieved on
current courses).  The covering letter should outline your interest in
researching the suggested topics, and a clear statement of your eligibility for
this ESPRC funded award.

The closing date for applications is 20th
April 2010.  Interviews will be held in late April/early May.  Any
inquiries or further information about the studentship should be emailed to Dr
Dejan Mumovic on d.mumovic@ucl.ac.uk For
more details see the attached file.
