The Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD) is a specialist research, consultancy and teaching group based within De Montfort University, which aims to make a worthwhile and significant contribution to sustainable development. The Institute's work focuses on the clean, efficient use of energy in the built environment and developing ways in which greater use can be made of renewable energy in domestic buildings, industry and commerce.
Research undertaken by the Institute's multi-disciplinary team covers a seamless range from basic modelling, through component and building simulation and performance evaluation, to city scale energy and environment analysis, management, planning and policy. Social research focuses upon the social, psychological, institutional and political aspects of sustainable development, spanning both transport related issues and the social implications of distributed, low carbon, energy technologies.
Recent research grant successes have been based on the multi-disciplinary perspective which the Institute can bring in the broad area of Sustainable Urban Development. These have included membership of key UK research groupings: the Sustainable Urban Form Consortium and the Supergen Future Networks Consortium. The Institute leads the work of the Carbon Reduction in Buildings Consortium, and the urban planning and development work of the Faraday Partnership for Integration of New and Renewable Energy in Buildings (INREB).
