The electronic Newsletter of IBPSA England (2019 No. 3)

Dear IBPSA England members

In this issue of our newsletter we are sharing some numbers and memories from the Building Simulation 2019 conference, as well as updating you with the latest news about BSO2020, our flagship event. But it doesn't stop there! IBPSA-England is also organising an exciting event on the 7th November to talk about everything TM54. And from this issue we are introducing the 'Ask a modeler' special column launched by IBPSA-USA. Scroll down to find out more!

Happy reading!

P.S. The IBPSA eNews is published on a quarterly basis, namely at the end of the following months: March, June, September, and December. If you would like to share Building Performance Simulation related information with all IBPSA England delegates, please don't hesitate to send an email to e.brembilla@lboro.ac.uk

Item 1: IBPSA Building Simulation 2019 in Rome

The IBPSA Building Simulation 2019 conference was a huge success, with a record-breaking number of attendees (just short of 1000)! The agenda during the three-day programme was packed with technical presentations, discussion panels, poster pitches and case study sessions. The four keynote speakers gave everyone food for thought, while social events provided wine, cheese and lots of networking opportunities. Awards were given: for best student paper, for best poster and for the outstanding work that students did in the modelling competition organised ahead of the conference. The finalist students are also presenting their work in a series of IBPSA webinars that you can find here. Last, some highly regarded figures in building simulation were awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the IBPSA, but more on that in the next item!

Can you spot anyone you know in the image below? For more conference photos, check here: buildingsimulation2019.org/conference-photographs

And remember that the conference proceedings will be made available free of charge on the IBPSA website.

Item 2: Three Fellows from the IBPSA-England board

During the Building Simulation 2019 conference, among other 17 individuals, as many as three members of the IBPSA-England board were awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the IBPSA. Ruchi Choudhary, current chair, Christina Hopfe, current board member, and Dejan Mumovic, past board member, were all recognised for attaining "unusual distinction in the field of building performance simulation" and for making "substantial contributions to this field". Lots of congratulations to them all!

Item 3: BSO2020 call for abstracts NOW open!

Loughborough University, UK, 9-10 September 2020
The Building Energy Research Group at Loughborough University is delighted to be hosting the Building Simulation and Optimization Conference in 2020.

Since we hosted the very first BSO in 2012 there has been rapid development in the software, tools, techniques and data sources available to the building simulation and optimization community. In this conference we aim to reflect on this transformation through a focus on the current state-of-the-art in the field and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. New for this conference is a series of pre- and post-conference workshops on the latest techniques in building simulation and optimization.

We hope you can join us, and we look forward to welcoming you to our superb 440 acre single-site campus situated in the heart of England.

The call for abstracts is now open and the submission deadline is 1st December 2019. Please see www.bso2020.org.

Item 4: IBPSA-England Networking Event on CIBSE TM54

IBPSA-England is organising an evening event all focused on CIBSE TM54 – Evaluating Operational Energy Performance of Buildings at the Design Stage

The two confirmed speakers are Rebecca Ward from Cambridge University and Claire Das Bhaumik from Inkling LLP. Claire will talk about applications of TM54 in practice and Rebecca will talk about the use of monitored data to define internal loads, discussing whether this is compatible with TM54. A third speaker will be announced in the next weeks.

The event will be held at Hurley Palmer Flatt offices in central London (map) on the 7th November 6-8pm. Registration details will be advertised soon on our website ibpsa-england.org.

Item 5: 'Ask a modeler' column on the IBPSA-USA website

This year, the IBPSA-USA Research Committee created ‘Ask a Modeler’, a monthly advice column for the building simulation community. Each month, committee chair Nathaniel Jones and members of the Emerging Simulation Technology subcommittee pose a question submitted by an IBPSA member to recognized experts to get their unique perspectives. Through this column, we hope to expand communication and create a sense of community among practitioners, researchers, and academics at all points in their building simulation careers.

From this issue onwards, the IBPSA-England newsletter will feature the latest question posted to 'Ask a Modeler' and the link to the answer on the IBPSA-USA website. We encourage all members to get involved by asking questions or by offering expert advice.

Ask a Modeler

What do you expect for the growth of energy modeling careers in the next few decades? Or, how will energy modelers evolve, career wise, especially when energy efficiency is fading, potentially less demanding policy asking for energy modeling, and renewable energy approaches 100% of source energy?
