The electronic Newsletter of IBPSA England (2018 No. 2)

Dear IBPSA England members

Please find the June IBPSA England Email newsletter (eNews) below. A lot of things happened in the last three months: IBPSA England has a brand new board, Pieter de Wilde has been very active and the organisers of the next BSO announced the keynote speakers!

Keep reading to find additional information about these latest news and much more. For example, did you know IBPSA World has a YouTube channel called IBPSA University? Look for the link at the end of this newsletter.

Happy reading!

P.S. The IBPSA eNews is published on a quarterly basis, namely at the end of the following months: March, June, September, and December. If you would like to share IBPSA England related information with all IBPSA England delegates, please don't hesitate to send an email to e.brembilla@lboro.ac.uk

Item 1: New Board Officers

Following elections of the new IBPSA England Board, the new officers for the next two-year 'mandate' were appointed. Ruchi Choudhary (Cambridge University) is the new chair, Robert McLeod (Loughborough University) is the new Vice-Chair, Anna Mavrogianni and Rokia Raslan (both at University College London) were jointly appointed as new secretaries.

Item 2: Building Simulation & Optimization (BSO) Conference 2018

Summer will fly by before you even realise it, and it will be soon time for the next BSO Conference in Cambridge!

The programme is going to be packed with presentations and posters on the latest building simulation and optimisation research, all within the beautiful surroundings of Cambridge's colleges. On top of this, the conference organisers announced two great keynote speakers: Prof Ryozo Ooka and Prof J A Clarke.

Early bird registration is open until the 31st August, don't miss it! For details and updates, check https://www.bso2018.event.cam.ac.uk/

Item 3: High Performance Buildings Symposium and Pieter de Wilde's Inaugural Lecture

On 10 May 2018, the University of Plymouth hosted a symposium in High Performance Buildings. This was well attended, with over 60 delegates. Ten speakers covered a wide range of subjects, including the use of simulation in building design and engineering, occupancy analytics, urban performance, data visualization and analytics, the Well standard, and ended with a review of a new Arts and Engineering Building that is currently being developed for the Plymouth campus.

In the evening, the symposium was followed by the inaugural lecture of Professor Pieter de Wilde, immediate past chair of IBPSA-England, on the subject of building performance analysis. If you did not make it to Plymouth, or if you want a second chance to count the angry birds scattered on Pieter's slides, you can watch the lecture at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85QpbfwoRQ0

Item 4: Building Performance Analysis: Book endorsed by IBPSA

A new book titled Building Performance Analysis by Pieter de Wilde is now available. This book is published by Wiley Blackwell and has been four years in the making. The work consists of 11 chapters, and is over 600 pages long. It is the second book to be endorsed by IBPSA. The book presents a comprehensive and systematic overview of the subject of building performance analysis. It provides a working definition of building performance, and an in-depth discussion of the role building performance plays throughout the building life cycle. The book explores the perspectives of various stakeholders, the functions of buildings, performance requirements, performance quantification (both predicted and measured), criteria for success, and the challenges of using performance analysis in practice. An introduction to the book has been presented to a worldwide audience in a webinar on 31 May; a recording of that talk is still available on the IBPSA University YouTube channel, accessible from this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPx-oWJ0K3k or by clicking on the image below. A website with further updates is maintained by the author at www.bldg-perf.org.

Item 5: DesignBuilder workshop on minimising overheating risk

DesignBuilder held a 2+1 days workshop at Loughborough University on the 11-13th June. The first two days of the workshop offered a general introduction to modelling building performance with DesignBuilder. The second part of the workshop focused more specifically on overheating in naturally ventilated buildings. Participants could learn how to create reports for compliance with the overheating-related requirements of Building Regulations, BB101, BREEAM and The London Plan using the TM52 and TM59 methods.
