Item 1: Message from the Chair

As the year draws to a close, it is time for the traditional reflection on IBPSA-England. We had a good year, with many of us attending the Building Simulation 2017 conference in San Francisco in August, making sure our Affiliate Region remains on the forefront of international developments. At home, we saw the launch of a new series of Networking events that aim to bring members together on a regular basis. Work is progressing well towards the next BSO conference, which will be hosted at Cambridge in September 2018. The next year will hopefully bring further energy to the Affiliate, as will be electing a new Board in Spring for the 2018-2020 timeframe. In the meantime, I would like to remind everyone that ideas and suggestions for new events and activities are always welcome.

Item 2: IBPSA-England Networking in 2017

In 2017 IBPSA-England introduced “IBPSA Networking” – A series of events in the field of building performance simulation, bringing together experts from the academia and the industry. The aim has been to discuss relevant experience on building performance simulation practices and showcase cutting edge research and applications. Three IBPSA Networking events were put together during 2017, each showcasing real life building performance simulation problems and solutions.
The first IBPSA-England Networking event was held at Sefaira’s office in March 2017, with some 20 people attending, representing both industry and academia, on a discussion regarding modeling natural ventilation in buildings. In July 2017, IBPSA-England organized a talk on the topic of energy and comfort modelling in residential buildings. Approximately 45 people attended the event, which was then followed by a lively discussion on how operative temperature and solar gains are being calculated by software engines commonly used in the industry. In September 2017, Atelier Ten hosted the third IBPSA Networking event in London, joined by an audience of approximately 80 architects, engineers and building services specialists. The event focused on the use of Ladybug + Honeybee environmental analysis plugins for grasshopper and their application as early decision making tools within the building design process. Following a successful networking year, IBPSA-England will continue curating the IBPSA Networking events in 2018. The aim, as always, will be to bridge the gap between industry and academia, by putting together experts from the academia and industry practitioners to discuss best practice and showcase the best of their work on common industry problems.

Item 4: Full Scholarships for Chinese Students at Loughborough in LoLo CDT

Loughborough University Doctoral College has launched a new scheme whereby postgraduate (PhD) level fees will be waived for Chinese students in receipt of China Scholarship Council funding. High-quality applicants graduating with a suitable degree and a passion to study Energy Demand at post-graduate level are welcome to join the LoLo-CDT at Loughborough Univeristy. 

The number of scholarships is limited and therefore applicants are encouraged to apply early (and no later than 31st January 2018).  Informal enquiries should be sent to the LoLo administrator,
Mrs Lisa Grieve, in the first instance. Full details of the Scholarship funding agreement and conditions can be found here. Applicants wishing to be considered for the 2018/19 intake should apply as soon as possible using the LoLo CDT website online application form.


Item 5: New Master's programme at UCL in Integrated Building Systems Design and Operation

A new Master’s programme will be offered starting 2018 by the Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering at UCL’s The Bartlett. The Integrated Building Systems Design and Operation MSc is particularly suited for students with an engineering or science background, that want to gain in depth knowledge and skills in this area. Areas covered by the programme include integrated building design, advanced modelling and simulation, energy management systems and performance evaluation. Strong emphasis is placed on advanced modelling and simulation using tools like EnergyPlus and Modelica. The programme builds upon the strong research track record of The Bartlett and was designed according to the Connected Curriculum principles of research-based teaching. For more information please visit the programme’s web page.
